36. How Do I Speed Up Reading My Emails?

You have three options of reading an email without opening it.

1. AutoPreview – you’ll see the first three lines of each new unread email.

2. Preview – you’ll see the email in it’s entirety. You can scroll through the email and read
it without ever opening it. You might be familiar with Preview in the bottom half of your
screen. Outlook 2003 /7 changed the preview to screen vertically on the right hand side.
From 2003 the name was changed to Reading Pane.

3. Both the AutoPreview and the Preview/Reading Pane are turned on.

Bonus 1: AutoPreview and Preview also works in your Calendar, Contact and Task folders.
Bonus 2: Often IT Managers discouraged users from previewing emails as doing so would
heighten the chance of getting more spam or a virus.

However if you have Outlook 2003 / 7, by default it is configured to block external content, which
stops that worrisome problem. If you are the only one on your computer, if your virus program is
up to date, if you use a firewall (www.zonealarm.com has a great free one), and you are smart
about not opening attachments, then you really don’t need to worry. Use preview.
